Austin W. Jones Foundation

Austin W. Jones began his employment with the Court as a part-time file clerk in 1950. He went on to serve this District in many capacities, most notably as Courtroom Deputy Clerk to the Honorable Francis W. Ford and as Chief Deputy Clerk in 1973, a position he held until his untimely death in 1981. Austin was born and raised in the City of Boston, and was a graduate of the Boston Latin School, Boston College and Boston University Law School.

To honor his memory, Austin's friends from the legal community and those representing his varied interests, established the Austin Jones Foundation to sponsor summer internships at the United States District Court for young persons from the inner City of Boston, especially those who had attended his alma mater, Boston Latin School. The students selected best exemplified Austin's qualities and values.

From 1983 to 2009, the Austin Jones Fellows were a valuable part of the District Court's internship program.

In 2010, the Austin Jones Foundation transferred responsibility for the remaining funds to Massachusetts Continuing Legal Education, Inc. They established a scholarship program to benefit attorneys who accept pro bono appointments and other attorneys who would otherwise be unable to attend MCLE programs without financial assistance. The District Court has continued to host Austin Jones Fellows through the Boston Bar Association’s Summer Jobs Program.
